Hey there! I am Gena, the owner of Gena's Design of the Heartland. I am 26 years old. I was always a very creative and imaginative child growing up on a farm in Eastern Iowa. I was also a very active 4-H member. I took many woodworking projects to the county fair and was honored to have a few go to the Iowa State Fair. All of these experiences helped pave the way for my business. If you would have asked me 8 years ago what I would have been doing today I certainly wouldn't have imagined this, but don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have it any other way.
I started freehanding signs for friends and family and it became so popular I decided to turn it into a business! Soon after, my husband John and I found out we were expecting. Ella was born in May of 2016. Around that time, I was selling my signs online and at county fairs, but I wanted to do more!
When I was little I always was playing pretend. Most of the time I was either a teacher or a business owner. There was always a fire burning within me to own my own business. I had the bright idea of teaching paint parties and it quickly took off. February 11th, 2017 was the day I taught my very first wood sign painting party. It was scary, but it was so much fun! Since then I have taught well over 10,000 people. I love meeting and chatting with people just like you. Creating close connections with my customers means the world to me.
Many people ask me, after all this time if I still love doing what I do. The answer is always YES! Helping people unleash their creative sides while giving them the mental break from whatever is weighing on their shoulders that week always makes me feel like I am doing a great job. The high-quality wooden sign they take home at the end of the class is just icing on the cake.
